Planting Inspiration from Mayfield

By Ally – Karana EEC

Most children enjoy being outdoors and love digging in the soil, getting dirty and watching plants grow and this is a wonderful way to get your child involved in nature, teaching them about the beauty of flowers and vegetables and introducing them to important life skills like patience, responsibility and commitment as they look after their gardens.

It’s always so wonderful to see how excited the children are when they come back from Mayfield farm with their pickings from the vegetable garden. After a wonderful group discussion, the children, in the Mirragin group, decided that they would like to have their own vegetable garden at Karana. This month we have been experimenting with different ways of propagating seeds and the children have had a great time planting and watching their seeds grow. Our Snow peas have grown so well in their mini green houses and we hope to have a beautiful sunflower garden soon.
